Formation and Mission Statement:

Formation and Mission Statement:With the substantial migration of Hyolmo families from the Hyolmo region to Kathmandu in the last twenty years, Hyolmo people have felt a need for an institution in Kathmandu itself that would enable them to keep the community organized both culturally and socially, and so help them to preserve traditional Hyolmo culture and values. There is a pressing need for such and institution, since Hyolmo people, who number only in the thousands, are faced with the potential lo of their traditional ways of life. Hyolmo Social Service Center came into being in 1993 in order to represent the community in Kathmandu and to function as an organized body that could address the social and cultural needs of the Hyolmo community. Presently there are 750+ members who elect an executive committee of 31 members every three years to run the organization.

Hyolmo

Hyolmo, a sacred Buddhist land situated in the mountains northeast of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is well-known for its rich culture and scenic beauty. It is inhabited primarily by a society known as Hyolmo people, an ethnically Tibetan Buddhist people. Mahayana Buddhists have revered Hyolmo lands since at the 8th century, when Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Mahayana Buddhist, traveled there and chose it as one of the places to leave behind his secret treasures of wisdom. Also the great Tibetan yogi Milarepa pursued his rigorous meditative retreat there. Having strong links to this history and to Mahayana Buddhist in general, the lives of Hyolmo people are centered on the Buddhist faith and its practice. This is well-reflected in the establishment of gompas (Buddhists temples) in almost all of the villages in Hyolmo
